How the estimate works

The tool starts from a typical mid-size yardage for each project, measured in worsted-weight yarn. Because thinner yarns cover less ground per yard, it then applies a multiplier for your chosen yarn weight – lace and fingering push the number up, while bulky and super bulky bring it down.

Finally it adds a 10% buffer for swatching, edging, and weaving in ends, and divides by your skein length to suggest how many skeins to buy. The presets assume an average adult or standard size, so scale up for oversized fits or extra length, and down for children’s sizes.

Worked example

Suppose you want an adult sweater in worsted-weight yarn, with 220 yards per skein. The worsted baseline for a sweater is about 1,500 yards, and the worsted multiplier is 1.0, so the base figure stays at 1,500 yards.

Adding the 10% buffer gives 1,650 yards, roughly 1,509 meters. Divided by 220 yards per skein and rounded up, that is 8 skeins. Switch the weight to bulky and the same sweater drops to around 1,238 yards, or 6 skeins.

How much yarn do I need for popular projects

As rough worsted-weight guides, plan on about 220 yards for an adult hat, 350 for a scarf, 800 to 1,200 for a baby blanket, and 1,000 to 1,500 for a lap throw. Garments vary most with size, so a swatch is always worth the time. The Craft Yarn Council weight system lists the gauge behind these figures.

For an exact number on a rectangular project, measure the finished width and length and use an area-based tool, then compare it against these presets. If you are matching an existing pattern, follow its stated yardage first. The yarn label guide shows where to find the length printed on your ball band.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for a hat?

A typical adult beanie in worsted-weight yarn takes about 200 to 250 yards, or one to two skeins depending on skein size. Slouchy or cabled hats sit at the higher end, while children hats need roughly half as much.

How much yarn do I need for a scarf?

A standard worsted scarf runs about 300 to 400 yards. Wider or extra-long wraps, and dense stitch patterns, can push that past 500 yards, so add a skein if you like a generous size.

How much yarn do I need for a blanket?

It depends heavily on size. A baby blanket needs roughly 800 to 1,200 yards of worsted, a lap throw 1,000 to 1,500, and a full afghan 2,000 to 3,500 yards. Enter your project above for a closer estimate.

Does yarn weight change the amount?

Yes. Finer yarns need more yardage for the same project because each stitch is smaller, while bulky yarns need less. This estimator applies a multiplier for each weight so the figure reflects the yarn you actually plan to use.

Should I round up when buying yarn?

Always round up and buy from a single dye lot. A 10% buffer is built in, but one spare skein guards against tension differences, mistakes, and edging, and leftovers are useful for future repairs.
